Physical Activities for Children with Special Needs

Experts recommend that children between the ages of six and 17 engage in moderate to vigorous physical activity for at least one hour every day. This includes bone- and muscle-strengthening activities at least three days a week. Unfortunately, many children with disabilities are often excluded or overlooked, despite evidence of various benefits of being physically active for them.

Most children with special needs have below-age-level abilities and motor skills. They struggle with hand-eye coordination and flexibility. Given the opportunities and encouragement to participate in physical activities, they can see improvements in muscle strength, cardiovascular health, and endurance.
